What does a feather bath and yellow hair have to do with Albania? – Music favs of August ’17

Music fills my soul. It powers my day and produces a feeling of ephoria in 5 seconds flat. So today, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite songs at the moment.

“Awoo” by Sofi Tukker ft. Betta Lemme

I first found out about this song by watching their TED talk. The song is alluring and peppy, but what made me fall in love was their video.

First of all, the two women are gorgeous, in the effortless way that only young women can be. The video is exotic and slightly weird. One minute, I’m envious, the next confused and then laughing. I can’t quite figure them out, but I get so happy anytime I listen to this song!

“Feels” by Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean [Explicit]

I love summer music. Music that comes out in the winter is edgy and bitter but summer music is just ready for a party and riding with the top down. I don’t have a convertible, but I rock that mommy mobile with the AC on (it’s hot outside).

The video looks like someone just found early 90s video filters, but I’m usually too busy dancing to notice!

“Hatixhe” by Mixey ft. Capital T

The other day, the Youtube algorithm thought I would like Albanian pop/hip hop music. Well, holy cow, do I ever! It’s this amazing mix of melodic rap with a “boom, chi, chi” beat and influences that sound middle eastern.

This led me down a rabbit hole of researching Albania, such as where it is (north of Greece), what’s their GDP per capita (USD $4,146), and what language they speak (Albanian). Which then led me to pictures of Albania, and man, it is gorgeous! Which led me to look at flights (~$2k, 15-17 hours).

Full disclosure: I don’t speak a lick of Albanian, so I don’t actually know what the song is about. Do you?

“Hey ya!” by Avriel & The Sequoias

Last week, I saw a video from Pentatonix and wondered why Avi was missing. A quick search on the internet found that Avi has left PTX to pursue a solo career that isn’t as grinding as the schedule PTX keeps.

Another search found his channel with his new band. The music is folk mixed with a little bit of bluegrass, and I LOVE IT. To be fair, I’m getting older and happen to love me some easy listening music.

A few of the songs remind me of Nick Drake or Cat Stevens (both of whom I’m enamored with). Give it a listen.
